Hôtel Adhémar de Lantagnac - Heritage house

The house of the families of Daniel and Adhémar of Lantagnac, is built in the middle of the eighteenth century. This private mansion is designed on the model of Aix between courtyard and garden. It houses the services of the governor of Menton. Its very sober façades with classic decoration contrast with the luxuriance of the interior decorations. A beautiful staircase with Louis XVI ironwork gives access to the noble floor. The living rooms have walls and ceilings decorated with Pompeian frescoes and painted trumpets. This hotel is now home to the Heritage House. It was declared a Historic Monument in 1977.
During the War of the Austrian Succession in September 1746, four English warships anchored at Menton harbour. The commander threatened to bomb the city, which owes its protection only to the presence of mind of its governor, Monsieur de Lantagnac. The latter narrates the facts to his superior: I thought it my duty to send on board the consuls and the captain of the port to offer them refreshments and fruits. The officer drank from our prince’s health and assured these gentlemen that Monaco, Menton and Roquebrune had nothing to fear…”.
