The Grimaldi caves are located on the seaside, on the Italian side of the Franco-Italian border. It was the home of the Homo erectus, Neanderthal man and Homo Sapiens of the upper Palaeolithic age. The discovery of burial sites from the upper Palaeolithic period contributed greatly to the site’s reputation. The site has about fifteen cavities, from which the most important are, from west to east : the Count Costantini Cave - the Children Cave - the Florestan Cave, named in honor of the prince who financed in 1846 the first excavations - L'Abri Mochi - Caviglione Cave - Barma Grande (Barma means cave in local dialect) - Prince’s Cave, the largest (35 18 22 m).
