PRESENTATION by Nino Laisné:
"Within the walls of the Franciscan convent of Saorge, strange voices resound. They celebrate the harmony of nature and call for a transmutation into birds. On the choir desk of the friars, scores populated by hybrid beings still vibrate, while in the darkness of certain paintings, the metamorphosis becomes clear [...].
Frati uccelli is inspired by Franciscan stories and attempts to revive the memory of these bird brothers within these walls. The work unfolds in three contiguous spaces, from the friars' choir to the sacristy - spaces originally reserved for the community. It invites us to be guided by polyphonic music sung in Genovese dialect and Italian.
The meeting with La Squadra di Genova was a determining factor in this project. They perform a series of poems embracing both 16th century sources and popular 20th century verses. In each of these fragments we find the essence of Franciscan thought, between wonder and secret connection with nature. This musical journey leads to a very free adaptation of Salomon de Priezac's 'Consert de differents oyseaux' (1625) to an aria by Étienne Moulinié, one of the jewels of the baroque repertoire translated into Italian for the occasion. These verses, which evoke the hybrid state of bird-men and their intoxicating song, prolong the transmutation so hoped for by the Franciscans.
In parallel to this musical research, I was interested in the astonishing vision of birds. These animals have an excellent panoramic view and, unlike humans, they can perceive certain near ultraviolet rays.
In the field of art restoration, ultraviolet light is used to distinguish underlays or details that are imperceptible to the naked eye.
In the convent of Saorge, for a few minutes, like a dream carried by the voices, the space is tinged with ultraviolet light and a farandole of hybrid beings takes possession of the place. Scenes of dance, ecstasy, or levitation appear in the half-light of the paintings, while in the skies, like so many mysterious signals, murmurings are lost on the horizon.
Frati uccelli is the search for a furtive epiphany, between folklore and secular mythology, celebrating an idealized body. An obsession that has crossed eras and geographies, always expressing the same desire to escape from its human form and the desire to make the fascinating song of birds its own.
