Le Prieuré à Saint-Dalmas de Tende

The Priory was first built in the year 731 by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of San Dalmas of Pedona (Italy). It underwent various conversions after the Revolution and was finally reoccupied by a congregation of nuns.
Many of the Renaissance works were stolen or destroyed, especially those in the Priory chapel, which were erased by the Sisters of the Assumption as being "too daring". During the 1939-1945 war, the nuns took in orphans and cared for wounded soldiers. Today, the crypt contains the sisters' tombs.
In 1951, the Priory was bought by a private individual and became a summer camp for several years. The property was then bought by the municipality and left abandoned for several years.
During the restoration, the portal of the Lascaris castle was found in the garden of the Priory, it is currently exposed in the Collegiate Church of Tende.
Nowadays, the priory houses an hotel-restaurant which is an ESAT (Establishment of service and help by work). Its mission is to allow an activity to adults recognized as disabled.
