At the beginning of the 19th century, under the reign of Prince Honoré V, old warehouses located in the Pont Neuf district were demolished in order to create a square showcasing the Hotel Trenca de Monléon which housed the services of the Governor General of the Principality of Monaco. When it was annexed to France, this square took the name of Napoleon III. A fountain surmounted by a column supporting a bust of the Emperor is erected on this occasion.
At the fall of the empire, it became National Square and since 1918 it honors the «Father Victory».
The mansion of the Trenca family of Monléon housed the services of the Town Hall from 1882 to 1902 as well as the first museum of Menton.
At the end of the 18th century, this square was the economic centre of the city. In a great abundance of traders and craftsmen, Menton life is based on activities related to citrus culture. Citrus packing shops for export, packers, carpenters-cashiers, cordiers, coopers, freight forwarders, etc. All this small world of workshops and shops is found in the four cabarets and the two hostels that animate the neighborhood.
Sometimes, with the help of drink, brawls come to disturb this harmony under the astonished gaze of the very first «tourists».
