At 300 meters from the caves of Grimaldi, flint tools were fortuitously discovered in 2012 in the garden of the villa Maria Serena, property of the city of Menton. An archaeological survey carried out in 2013 made it possible to recognize the sedimentary level of origin of these prehistoric objects. It is a deposit formed from the erosion of land located in Italian territory, upstream of the gorges of the torrent Saint-Louis. This river marks the Franco-Italian border near the seaside. Tools, small blades, scrapers, scrapers, as well as nucleus (blocks of raw material formed for the extraction of future tools), are formed in a flint that is found in the sedimentary level of Maria Serena. They are attributed to the Epipaleolithic and date from about 12,000 years old. It is the period of the last climactic upheavals at the end of the Ice Age and before the beginning of the temperate period that we know today. The epipaleolithic hunters who frequented the caves of Grimaldi passed through the grounds of the present garden of the villa Maria Serena. They gathered and cut flint there.
