    The street was first called Rue Neuve, before being called Rue de Bréa, in the second half of the 19th century. A plaque on the house of the Monléon family commemorates the passage of Pope Pius VII in Menton in 1814. Opposite, another plaque recalls the memory of General Jean-Baptiste de Bréa, born in Menton in 1790 and murdered in Paris in June 1848. A last plaque evokes the passage of General Bonaparte in 1796, when he left for the Italian campaign.
    In 1814, after his exile at Fontainebleau, Pope Pius VII was allowed to return to his states.
    In Menton, on 11 February he was received by Monléon’s family.
    Mrs Trenca de Monléon recalls:
    This dinner, how frugal, to please the Holy Father who usually fed on boiled eggs! (living in the fear of being poisoned).
