The Longue Street, parallel to the Quai Bonaparte, is the main artery of the old town. Between the Saint-Julien gate in the East and the Saint-Antoine gate in the Southwest, it follows the route of the ancient Roman road Julia Augusta. Along it stood, until the beginning of the fifteenth century, the rampart that protected the city on the sea side. It took foundation on the rocks of the shore disappeared during the successive damming. From the fifteenth century, the city developed and houses were built on this rampart. The maritime facade now has a level of up to nine levels, by adding lower and upper floors. From Via Julia Augusta, this street became successively the rectal carriera (right street), Long Street, Republic Street, Grimaldi Street and becomes Long Street again in 1865.
A supporting arch on Rue Longue evokes a story of Romeo and Juliet from Menton.
This purely technical architectural element is magnified by the local tradition as a bridge of love connecting the two houses of the «promessi sposi» who met at night and to the great displeasure of the parents, on this impromptu balcony. Rue Longue also bears the memory of a great 18th-century Don Juan, Casanova, who visits Prince Honoré III and his wife Marie Catherine during a stay on our shores in their palace on Rue Longue.
