Randonnée VTT(AE) Col de Tende - Castérino Haute Route du Sel Menton Riviera & Merveilles

This fourth stage leads to the hamlet of Castérino. This small hamlet is the easiest access to discover the famous rock engravings of the Vallée des Merveilles. This route can be done on a classic mountain bike (pro level) or on an electrically assisted mountain bike. It is the fourth stage of the roaming of the Haute Route du Sel (direction La Brigue - Tende) and can be done on the occasion of a simple round trip (joining the Col de Tende in a 4x4).

Departure from the Col de Tende, follow the track which heads south-west, towards the Fort de la Marguerie (about 2 km.) The track is pleasant and easy to follow, it winds on the side of the mountain with a level curve .

Continue on the track after Fort de la Marguerie in the direction of Peïrefique. Cross the bridge and continue towards the old barracks of Peïrefique. One more kilometer: here is the fall of Peïrefique (2050 m.) and its fortified works which appear. It's time to take a break and appreciate the landscape, before the descent to Castérino.

Then take the track that descends towards point 1949, the valley of Castérino gradually reveals itself below. Opposite the heights dominate the landscape: the Sabion pass, Mount Paracouerte. Pass the Valmasque waterfall and tackle the last climb before arriving at a small car park, the starting point for hikes. Pass the car park and reach Castérino about 1.5 kilometers below.
